How to number comments on blog posts

When doing a giveaway on your blog it makes it so much easier if your comments on numbered.  We usually use the random number generator to pick a winner.  It takes too much time to count through the comments to find winner #30 or even #60!!  I decided it was time to do a tutorial and add the numbers to the comments on our blog!!  It also makes it look cute and professional!  This easy tutorial will show you how to number comments on your blogger posts.   It is always smart to back up your template before you make any changes.   If you want to do this click Download Full Template.

1.  Let’s get started!! Go to your Layout page and click Template directly under Layout.  Now click on Edit HTML.

2.  A box will pop up.  Click on Proceed.

3.  Now you will want to check the box next to  Expand Widget Template.

4.  Next you are going to be searching for this code below.  Hit Ctrl F and a search box will come up.  Paste this code in the box:

<b:loop values=’data:post.comments’ var=’comment’>

Once you find that code paste this code directly ABOVE it:

<script type=’text/javascript’>var CommentsCounter=0;</script>

5.  Go back to the search box and paste this new code into it:

<b:if cond=’data:comment.authorUrl’>

Once you find that code paste this code directly ABOVE  it:

<script type=’text/javascript’>

CommentsCounter=CommentsCounter+1;
document.write(CommentsCounter+”.”)
</script>

6.  Now preview your blog.  You won’t be able to see if the comments are numbered, but I like to do this just to make sure nothing looks off on my blog.  Next click save.  You comments will now be numbered under the posts on your blog!!
